Spot, gray trout move into local waters

Catches have been hit or miss for area fishermen in the wake of Hurricane Irene.

Jerry Thrash of Queens Creek Outfitters in Mathews reported that large spot have moved in as have pan-sized gray trout. Both, he said, are biting around Gwynn’s Island, on the Spike and in the Piankitank and Rappahannock River mouths.

Some Spanish mackerel are still being caught trolling and there are a lot of small blues up to 18 inches being caught, Thrash said.

"Large croakers are still available in the Cell/42 area," he added. "They will start leaving the bay soon."

Finally, he said speckled trout and puppy drum were caught around Gwynn’s Island, the Hole-in-the-Wall and in the Piankatank.
