Gloucester County had 23 post offices and three delivery routes in the spring of 1966, and Mathews County had 28 post offices. Arthur W. Jones of Susan designed a “Postoffice Puzzler” for Gazette-Journal readers to find these post offices.
His instructions: “The name of each post office is spelled out in the jumble of letters below—always in a straight line—sometimes horizontally, sometimes vertically, sometimes diagonally—sometimes criss-crossing, sometimes spelled forward, sometimes spelled backward.”
