Cobbling Clark’s Shoe and Boot Repair opened March 29 at The Shops at Hickory Fork, White Marsh.
Chuck Clark of Yorktown, who owns the business with his wife Diana, said he relocated from a site at Hayes. The Clarks purchased the business 2½ years ago from former owner Mike Baldezore, who had operated at the Hayes location under the name Dakota Cobbler Shoppe for many years; Baldezore now lives in Arizona.
The new location provides a more central location in the county, Clark said, with customers coming from throughout Gloucester and nearby communities for a variety of repair services. Clark said he and his staff of family members repair all types of shoes and boots (including large quantities for Colonial Williamsburg costumed interpreters, Busch Gardens dancers and other museums), as well as luggage and lawnmower bags.
“We have some unique sewing machines,” Clark said of their heavy commercial uses. In addition to repairs, the staff makes leather belts and knife sheaves.
The shop sells some shoes and boots on consignment and sells some new clothing. A selection of jewelry by Kim Siebert is sold there on consignment. Also, the shop sells shoe polish, laces and other accessories.
Clark works full-time at the shop. His daughter Ashley Clark of Hampton and daughter-in-law Danielle Clark of Gloucester help him full-time.
Diana Clark works there part time, working full-time at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown. Danielle’s husband, Jon-Eric Clark, a commercial scallop fisherman, helps part time, as does Ashley’s boyfriend, John Buday of Hampton.
Originally from Michigan, Clark served in the Navy for 20 years, including service as an optician at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown.
