Sheepshead fishing hot in Bay waters

Sheepshead fishing has been hot in Chesapeake Bay waters this week, according to reports from local bait and tackle shops.

Hope Jenkins of York River Feed and Fishing Supplies at Gloucester Point, reported that Mark Burkowski landed three fish Saturday at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, weighing 11 pounds, 14 ounces; 11 pounds, 3 ounces, and 10 pounds, 9 ounces.

James Crouse, she said, caught a 13-pound, 9-ounce fish and a 24-inch release sheepshead Saturday, also at the tunnel. Finally, she said Jimmy Leiffer landed a 12-pound sheepshead last week.
As far as general fishing, Jenkins said, "they’re out there. There have been some small speckled trout and still a few spot around, but things have kind of slowed down."

Jerry Thrash of Queens Creek Outfitters at Cobbs Creek, reported that the spot bite has been good at the Spike, the Mudhole and off Gwynn’s Island, in 25-30 feet of water. He said mullet and gray trout are mixed in.
