Services announced by local churches

Special services and other activities in churches this week, include the following:

Abingdon Episcopal

Abingdon Episcopal Church, White Marsh, is collecting non-perishable food items for the Bread for Life Food Pantry. All non-perishables may be brought to the parish house during office hours (Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-noon).

Like Abingdon Church on Facebook and subscribe to its YouTube channel to join in live Sundays at 9 a.m. for an online worship service. Come to worship, then stay for fellowship; virtual coffee hour Sunday at 10. To receive a bulletin of the order of service, email the church at admin@abingdonchurch.org.

Apostles Lutheran

Physical worship services at Apostles Lutheran Church, Gloucester, are still suspended for the time being. The virtual worship service for the festival of the Holy Trinity, Sunday, June 7, is available on the website, apostles-elca.org, under “Apostles Worship at Home.”

Beech Grove Baptist

Beech Grove Baptist Church, Hayes, will host a parking lot worship service at 11 a.m. Sunday. There are currently two broadcasts on Facebook (Beech Grove Baptist Church-Gloucester, VA) during the week.

Bible study, led by Pastor Richard Croxton, is held on Thursday evenings at 7 o’clock and the Sunday service is being broadcast on Sunday mornings at 10 o’clock.

Bethany United Methodist

The sermon title of Pastor Mike Derflinger of Bethany United Methodist Church, Gloucester Point, on Sunday will be “Three Phrases to Keep a Friend.” This will be broadcast on the YouTube channel. For more information visit www.bethanyumc-gp.org or Facebook.

Bethel Baptist

Bethel Baptist Church, Gloucester, continues to hold worship services online or by conference call. The sermon title of the Rev. James Harris will be “Rules for the Road Ahead.” The sermon will begin at noon. The service can be accessed by logging on to https://global.gotomeeting.com/join/929136757. You can also call 1-312-757-3121 and use Access Code: 929-136-757#. Sunday school will start at 10 o’clock using the same access information.

Central United Methodist

The sermon title of the Rev. John Choi, pastor of Central United Methodist Church, Mathews, for the 9:15 a.m. Sunday online service will be “God’s Prescription for the World.” The link to the livestreamed service can be found at www.centralumcmathews.org.

Gloucester Point Baptist

Gloucester Point Baptist Church will hold its Sunday online service at gloptbaptist.org. The sermon title of Pastor Bud Goude will be “Kneel Down to Win.”

A weekly devotional will be posted each Thursday on its website.

Grace Covenant Presbyterian

The sermon title of Dr. Doug Nagel of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, Gloucester, at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday communion service will be “Four Sides Of Forgiveness: Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word, Forgiving Ourselves.”

The church is open for those who wish to attend in person, wearing masks and social distancing are being practiced. For those who do not wish to come in person, livestreaming on Facebook will be available.

Gwynn’s Island Baptist

Gwynn’s Island Baptist will host a drive-in worship service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday around the gazebo across from the church. Parking will begin at 10:15. The sermon topic of Dr. Ed Jordan, pastor, will be “The Ultimate Makeover.” Special music will include Lori Oliver and a recorded piano-organ duet by Merle Guy and John Lee Callis.

Kingston Episcopal Parish

Kingston Episcopal Parish, Mathews, will hold online Sunday services on its Facebook page, as well as on YouTube.com available after 8 a.m. on Sundays. To receive an email copy of the Sunday bulletin, call the church office at 804-725-2175.

An Armchair Pilgrimage Class of the holy sites in Great Britain is taking place by email and Facebook. To join the class, contact the Rev. Gary Barker at barkergaryj@gmail.com. Masks and essential supplies are available for anyone in need by calling the office.

New Point Friends

The sermon title of Pastor Thomas Bunting of New Point Friends Church at 11 a.m. Sunday will be “Israel’s Rejection of Christ.”

Newington Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor Mike Gray of Newington Baptist Church, Gloucester, on Sunday will be “The ONE Thing.” The church is returning to the building this week with a new worship time, 10:30 a.m. The church said, “If you choose to worship in the sanctuary, note that social distancing will be in practice. If you have a mask, bring it with you. If you need a mask, Newington will provide one for you; just ask at the welcome desk.” The worship service will continue to be live on Newington’s Facebook page and will also be broadcast via FM transmitter to the back parking lot.

Shepherdsville Baptist

Shepherdsville Baptist Church, Gloucester, continues to have Sunday morning service by way of conference call at 10:45; join the service by calling 712- 770-4112 access code 876749#. Also visit its website, www.shepherdsvillebaptistchurch.org. The sermon title of Pastor Douglas Riley will be “If You Pray Don’t Worry, if You Worry Why Pray!” Words for the week ahead: “The happiest people don’t have the best of everything, they make the best of everything they have.”

The First United Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor E. Randolph Graham of the First United Baptist Church, White Marsh, for the 11 a.m. Sunday service will be “The Paraclete.” The service will be “Drive Up” and streamed via Facebook Live and Zoom Call.

Union Baptist

The sermon title at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service at Union Baptist Church, Achilles, will be “God’s Glory or My Glory?“ The service will be held in the parking lot (in your car or chairs will be available), weather permitting.

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Rappahannock

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Rappahannock, White Stone, has canceled all June, July, and August in-person Sunday services.

Westville Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor Bob Huff of Westville Baptist Church, Mathews, at the 11 a.m. Sunday communion service will be “Who is the Anti-Christ?” Sunday school on “Proverbs” will resume at 9:45.

The church continues to collect used clothes, shoes and small housewares in its mission box in the parking lot.

Zion Poplars Baptist

Zion Poplars Baptist Church, Gloucester, has canceled services for Sunday.
