Second phase of Main Street project on hold

The second phase of the Mathews Main Street Enhancement Project is going to have to wait at least another year. Funding for the work was not approved for the upcoming year by the Commonwealth Transportation Board, which met in September to determine allocations.

Main Street Committee Chair Bette Dillehay said the board had made no negative comments about the county’s application, but had indicated that, because Mathews had been awarded grants for Phase 1 and for the restoration project on New Point Comfort Lighthouse, other localities were instead given precedence in this round of funding.

According to the CTB’s application summary, of the 128 applications statewide that were received, 79 were awarded full funding and seven were awarded partial funding. Forty-two requests received no funding.
