Second hearing on floodplain ordinance set

A second public hearing has been scheduled for Mathews County’s proposed Flood Plain Management Ordinance. It will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the historic courthouse on Court Street.

In a special meeting on Monday, the Mathews County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved having the public hearing two weeks earlier than it had agreed to just a week ago during the regular September meeting.

Supervisors chair Charles Ingram explained that the ordinance must be approved by Dec. 9 in order to comply with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s requirements. If not, he said, county residents could be in jeopardy of losing their flood insurance.
