School needs addressed on legislative tour

From aging school facilities and competition over an ever-declining pool of qualified teachers to a shocking rise in the frequency of student mental health issues, Mathews school administrators let legislators know some of their top concerns during a tour earlier this week.

In recent years, the annual legislative tour has been confined to one school; on Monday morning, it was Thomas Hunter Middle School’s turn.

In addition to county school board members and supervisors, the only other elected official in attendance was state Sen. Lynwood Lewis (D-Accomac), who was accompanied by his legislative assistant Jessie Williams. Joe Schumacher, district director for Rep. Rob Wittman (R-Montross), was on hand to represent the congressman.
