School, county officials to review engineering plans for L-J gym roof

School and county officials will review five engineering proposals in the coming weeks on how best to repair or replace the failing roof over the Lee-Jackson Elementary School gymnasium.
The proposals were received after the school division issued a Request for Qualifications for a registered design professional to evaluate the options, make a recommendation for the best alternative and provide plans and specifications for bidding the work.
Damage to the gym roof came to light following an inspection of the county’s three schools after the roof at Donk’s Theater in Hudgins collapsed following a Jan. 22 snowstorm.
At that time, it was determined that 13 trusses supporting the roof had failed. “All of the damaged trusses have failed in the same manner in that the center vertical web of the truss has ‘pulled loose’ from the connector plate at the peak of the truss,” according to the advertised RFQ.
