School board moves ahead with new Page Middle School

After months of uncertainty, Page Middle School, heavily damaged by an April tornado, will have a new home.

Meeting Tuesday night in the colonial courthouse, members of the Gloucester County School Board unanimously approved a new grade 6-8 Page Middle School to be built on the school’s T.C. Walker Road site. It was projected that teachers and staff will be able to move into the new building Aug. 1, 2014.

Superintendent of Schools Ben Kiser also informed the school board Tuesday night that a modified insurance settlement had been reached on the damaged school, increasing the money the school system will receive by about $650,000.

After sending additional data and current construction costs to the school’s carrier, the Virginia Municipal League, Kiser said he heard that the company would increase the settlement from $7.5 million, which was the original figure, to $8,235,687.
