SAR to commemorate anniversaryof Williamsburg gunpowder incident

A commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the gunpowder incident in Williamsburg will be held Saturday on the Palace Green at the Governor’s Palace on Duke of Gloucester Street in Colonial Williamsburg.
The gunpowder incident took place on April 20, 1775, when Lord Dunmore ordered the removal of gunpowder from the magazine in Williamsburg to a Royal Navy ship. This action sparked local unrest, and militia companies began mustering throughout the colony. The following morning, Captain Henry Collins of the armed schooner Magdalen successfully removed 15 barrels of gunpowder from the magazine.
The Williamsburg Chapter, Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution, is hosting the observance, which will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.
