Salty Dog Pizzeria, located at 10532 Buckley Hall Road, Mathews, has had “an incredible first year” since opening on Jan. 28, 2019, said owner Jessie Messinger.

She said the company specializes in “Pizza made with fresh hand-tossed dough, homemade sauce and a wide variety of fresh ingredients.” Sub sandwiches, salad bar, appetizers, and baked spaghetti are also on the menu.

Messinger is a native of Orcas Island, Washington, who has lived in Virginia for 23 years. She said that she has been in the hotel and restaurant industry for close to 35 years. While dabbling in other trades, “somehow I always come back to what I know best,” she said.

She is grateful because “Mathews County has welcomed us with open arms and has continued to support us through our current epidemic” and cites family and friends who have played a part “in making the Salty Dog Pizzeria happen.”
