ROY LEE BELVIN

Roy Lee Belvin, 89, of Yorktown, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 22, 2012.

He was born in Bena, Va., the youngest son of John Wesley and Virginia Pinkie Brown Belvin.

In l925, the family moved from Bena to Dandy where his father established Belvin’s Boats. Roy attended Dandy Elementary, Yorktown Elementary and graduated from Poquoson High School in 1941.

After graduation he went to work in Newport News for the Horace E. Dodge Boat & Plane Corporation as a boat carpenter. During his employment there he met Susie Elizabeth Overby; she also worked for the Dodge Plant as a payroll clerk. Later in l943 they were married and built their home in Dandy.

He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1944-1946, serving on the USS Vulcan AR5 and Battleship USS New York as a carpenter’s mate in the fleet repair shop. He retired from Colonial Williamsburg in l984 after 36 years of service as a master carpenter, and millwork shop foreman.

He was a long-time member of Grafton Christian Church, serving as a Deacon Emeritus. For the past four years he was a resident of Colonial Harbor Retirement Home in York County.

Roy loved being on the water, sharing his stories and the history of York County, and genealogy. He loved his family very much, and never met a stranger.

 Roy was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Susie Elizabeth; four brothers, Andrew, John, Herbert (Tony) and Enoch; four sisters, Eliza Ellen, Pearl, Lucy and Hilda.

He is survived by five daughters, Betty Brevard (George), Linda Jones (Larry), Alice Owens (Jimmy), Cheryl Long (Paul),  Stephanie Curtin (Tom); 11 grandchildren, Lisa, Wendi, Katherine, Traci, Brent, Jamie, Elizabeth, Chase, Ashley, Jack and Julia; nine great-grandchildren, Josh, Addison, Anna, Casey, Hayley, Paityn, Parker, Blake, and Logan, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Our family would like to express our appreciation to the personnel of Riverside Hospital, Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg, and Heartland Hospice.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26, in the chapel of Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, in the funeral home.
