‘Roving Ranger’ to serve as historic trail’s mobile visitor center

The Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail, in collaboration with the Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network, is bringing the “Roving Ranger” to visitors along the trail this summer.

The mobile visitor center is equipped with maps, Junior Ranger books and activities for all ages to learn about the trail and its many partner sites along the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.

The Roving Ranger has already visited two events in the local community surrounding the trail’s headquarters at Historic Jamestowne, which is part of the Colonial National Historical Park. In April, trail staff and interns braved the “Yorktown Pirate Invasion,” an annual event that celebrates Yorktown’s maritime heritage. As it was also Junior Ranger Day, families were invited to participate in the Junior Ranger Program and be sworn in as Junior Rangers.
