Richard (Dick) Daniel Kostyal, 89, of Mathews, passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at the turning of the tides on his beloved Piankatank.

Richard was born on Sept. 17, 1928. After graduating Hampton High, he served two years in the Marine Corps and attended University of Richmond before beginning a lifetime career with the C&O RR.

He spent his final decades fishing and boating in Mathews County with his cherished wife, Helen, and his children and grandchildren. He and Helen were members of Coast Guard Flotilla 66 and Mathews Yacht Club, and he belonged to Hampton Elks Club.

He is survived by daughters, Karen Kostyal and her husband Charles Smith, Kristen and her husband Pete Dolan, Kimberly Kostyal and her husband, Dennis Dimick; five grandchildren, Brandon and Justin Wood, Will Smith, and Claudia and Sofia Dimick, and two great-grandchildren, Bryce Wood and Sydney Wood.

A graveside service was held on Saturday, July 28, 2018, at 3 p.m. at H.C. Smither Cemetery, Hudgins.

Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews, assisted the family with the arrangements.
