The Rev. Vernon L. Woodard will be installed as the 20th pastor of Zion Baptist Church, Cardinal, at a service at 4 p.m. Saturday at Newington Baptist Church, 6196 Main Street, Gloucester.
Woodard is a native of Newport News, a graduate of Thomas Nelson Community College (Associate of Science), Old Dominion University (Bachelor of Arts in History and Secondary Education), Virginia Union University (Master of Divinity), and Old Dominion University (Education Specialist). He is also a 2017 fellow of the Princeton Theological Seminary’s Black Theological Leadership Institute. He currently a student in the PhD program for Educational Leadership at Old Dominion University.
Woodard was licensed on Jan. 2, 2011 and ordained on Sept. 20, 2015 at the Ivy Baptist Church in Newport News, by his pastor, the Rev. Dr. Kevin G. Swann. Woodard served as the first full time youth pastor in the church.
