Residents question MHS principal appointment

A new principal for Mathews High School was appointed Tuesday night, and the decision has generated a fair amount of controversy.

Following a closed session during Tuesday’s Mathews County School Board meeting in the MHS media center, Toni Childress of Gloucester was named to replace Albert Green, who has accepted a position with York County Schools as that division’s Associate Director of School Administration.

Childress has served for the past four years as truancy officer for Gloucester County Public Schools. For two years, she has also served as co-supervisor of the Regional Alternative School Program in King William County Public Schools.

During the public comment period at the end of Tuesday’s meeting, several speakers questioned why Alexis Foster, who has served as the high school’s assistant principal under both Green and David Malechek before him, had been passed over once again for the top job.
