Republicans select slate of statewide candidates

The Republican slate of candidates for statewide office is now set, following Saturday’s Republican Party of Virginia 2021 State Convention.

Glenn Youngkin tops the ticket as the GOP candidate for governor. He is a former co-CEO of private equity firm the Carlyle Group.

Winsome Sears was picked to be the party’s choice for lieutenant governor. Twenty years ago, the Marine veteran became the first Black Republican woman elected to the Virginia General Assembly.

The Republican nominee for attorney general is Jason Miyares. A member of the House of Delegates representing Virginia Beach, Miyares is a former prosecutor.

Democrats are in the process of selecting their candidates for statewide office, with early voting already being held ahead of the June 8 primary.
