Temporary repairs are underway on the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge over the York River to eliminate the current need for manually operated openings. Brittany McBride, Virginia Department of Transportation information officer, said work began Monday and should be completed “within the next few weeks, weather and schedule permitting.” The temporary repairs are estimated to cost approximately $1 million, she said. Manual openings became necessary in November when mechanical issues arose, and made it impossible to use the automated system. As a result, wait times on bridge openings increased by 25-40 minutes, VDOT said. McBride said the temporary repairs “focus on addressing damaged components within the lift grating system by installing new hydraulic equipment to be raised and lowered in a controlled manner.” This eliminates the need for manual openings, she said.
