Red Devils shut out Blue Devils, 24-0

The Mathews High School varsity football team dropped to 0-3 last week after being shut out by the visiting Lancaster Red Devils on Friday, 24-0.

Lancaster got on the scoreboard for the first time late in the first quarter. On the first play after Mathews turned the ball over on downs at the Red Devil 10-yard line, senior running back Christopher Dameron blew past the Blue Devil defense for a 90-yard touchdown run. A pair of second-quarter TD receptions by Benjamin Lee gave Lancaster an 18-0 edge going into halftime.

Mathews had its best chance to score with about two minutes left in the third quarter, when Blue Devil Noah Lewis blocked a Lancaster punt, giving Mathews the ball on the Red Devils’ 25. Several plays later, a fumble near the goal line extinguished any hope of a Mathews score. Lancaster scored its fourth and final touchdown with 2:31 left to play, sealing the victory.
