REAL ID deadline approaching

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and the Transportation Security Administration reminds Virginians that the enforcement deadline for REAL ID is May 7.

REAL ID is a choice for Virginians, said a press release, but as of May 7, those who plan to fly domestically or enter federal facilities—including courthouses and military bases—must present a REAL ID-compliant credential or another federally accepted document, such as a U.S. passport or military ID.

A star on the top right corner of a Virginia driver’s license or ID indicates REAL ID compliance.

To avoid the last-minute rush, residents should apply for the ID before the deadline, said the release. The DMV issued more than 104,000 REAL IDs in March, bringing the total issued since October 2018 to more than 4.1 million, or 59 percent of all active Virginia driver’s licenses and IDs.

To meet a growing demand for the ID, DMV is extending hours at some customer service centers across the state, including Hampton, where Saturday hours have been extended, and has been deploying mobile service teams to various locations.

The DMV recommends starting the REAL ID application online to determine what the required documents are ahead of time, then make an appointment at a customer service center to make the process faster. The one-time fee for a REAL ID is $10 in addition to the cost of the driver’s license or ID card fee.
