Raccoons bite two in separate Gloucester incidents

Two people in Gloucester were bitten by raccoons in the Court House and Ware Neck areas in a pair of separate incidents over the past month.

Neither raccoon was confirmed to be rabid, according to environmental health supervisor M.B. Sheppard Jr. with the Gloucester Health Department.

Sheppard said the first incident occurred April 26 in Gloucester Court House. In this incident, it was reported that a raccoon fell out of a tree and an animal rescue individual was contacted by an observer. Sheppard said the raccoon appeared to be stunned, and was removed to a cage.

In the process of being moved to the cage, the raccoon bit the animal rescue individual on her pinky finger, leaving a tiny puncture wound. Sheppard said being in the animal rescue field, the individual had already received her pre-exposure vaccinations and was given post-exposure vaccinations following the incident.
