The Gloucester County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing at 7:45 p.m. next Thursday, Oct. 3, in the colonial courthouse about placement of awnings along Main Street.

Chairman Natalie Johnson said that the proposed changes to the county’s zoning ordinance are amendments to existing regulations regarding the applicability of setback requirements.

The proposal seeks to allow awnings, as defined in the proposed ordinance, to project into the required setback and potentially into the public right-of-way, a notice said. Such projections must meet requirements of the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Planning director Anne Ducey-Ortiz has said at several earlier commission meetings that the architectural projections matter is intended specifically for awnings in the B-2 Village Business District. She said that the approximately 20 storefronts that might be affected are primarily located in the commercial portion of Main Street (Business Route 17).
