Planners support Bohannon business proposal

The Mathews County Planning Commission on Tuesday voted unanimously to support a request by Bohannon resident Mark Ottarson for a conditional use permit to operate a business selling canine care products in the former Bohannon Post Office.
The decision followed a joint public hearing with the Mathews County Board of Supervisors at which no one spoke in opposition to the proposed business.
Cindy Gebhard, who owns the property adjacent to the building, said that she initially had concerns about the impact the business might have on her driveway, but that she had spoken with Ottarson and had been assured that her driveway would not be used.
“I’m happy to see a business in Bohannon,” she said.
Commission member Danette Machen, speaking during the planning commission meeting after the board of supervisors had adjourned, said she grew up in Bohannon when it was a vibrant community and supports the establishment of a business there.
