Peasley math teacher wins Teacher of Year honors

Megan Harris has been selected as the Gloucester County Public Schools Teacher of the Year, the GCPS Educational Foundation has announced.

Harris is a mathematics teacher at Peasley Middle School, and is also Gloucester’s middle school Teacher of the Year. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics from Christopher Newport University in 2006 and began teaching for GCPS.

Harris also earned her Virginia teaching license through the University of Virginia and the University of Phoenix, and holds a masters of education in curriculum and instruction from the College of William and Mary.

Two other finalists, Abingdon Elementary kindergarten teacher Christine Keene and Gloucester High School English teacher Emily Nunez, were recognized as the GCPS elementary and high school Teachers of the Year.

“It was both humbling and inspiring to hear the stories our teachers told about how they met the challenges of in-person, hybrid and online delivery of their lessons this past year,” said GCPS Educational Foundation Board Chair Dr. Sharon Stone.

“The common thread was relationship-building, providing stability and addressing issues of anxiety among the students in their classrooms and, in some cases, throughout the school. That they were also able to achieve their learning outcome goals was most impressive.”

Other GCPS 2020-2021 Teachers of the Year and their respective schools were as follows: Hannah Kellogg, Achilles Elementary; Becky Johnson, Bethel Elementary; Colleen Roady, Botetourt Elementary; Alyssa Thomas, Petsworth Elementary; Amy O’Neil, Page Middle School and Crystal Thompson, GHS.
