Mathews Memorial Library has a new program, Paws for Reading, that offers children a chance to interact with a therapy dog while reading books. Here, from left, the Kemp family, Tyler Lane, her sister Josie, and their mom Amanda, talk with Canine Companions service dog sitter Susan Hill, along with therapy dog Canto. Canto is owned by Canine Companions, and lives with volunteer handlers Tom and Vivian Steuterman of North, who take care of all of Canto’s needs, including veterinary bills, and make sure he serves the Mathews community and beyond by visiting nursing homes, libraries, schools, and other public spaces. Canto went through the same training as Canine Companions service dogs, but did not become a service dog because of a propensity for alert barking. He will visit the library again on Thursday, May 21, from 3-5 p.m. The public is invited.
