‘Our Indigenous People’ opens next week at museum

A new exhibit, “Our Indigenous People,” will open next week at the Mathews Museum, 200 Main Street. Russell Reed, who grew up in Mathews and is a descendant of the Atakapa tribe, will serve as curator for the exhibit, which opens on Thursday, March 12. Reed is also set to address a meeting of the Mathews County Historical Society at 7 o’clock tonight, March 5, at Mathews Memorial Library. His topic will be “Mathews Virginia and The Eastern Woodlands: A Native History.” Reed is known for his artwork that often explores themes of transformation and historical narratives, including those related to Native American culture. His paintings reflect a blend of traditional and contemporary styles, focusing on the stories of people and their experiences. This exhibit has been in the making for more than a year.
