Organizations battle it out in Chili Cook-Off

In the leadup to Sunday’s Super Bowl, the Mathews Rotary Club held its 10th annual Chili Cook-Off on Saturday afternoon at the Piankatank Ruritan Club building in Hudgins, pitting organizations against one another for best chili bragging rights and letting everyone taste the competition’s entries.

“Despite the frigid cold and high winds, there was a good turnout,” said Susan Murdoch of the Mathews Rotary Club, adding that the club is still tallying how much money was raised. Funds from the Chili Cook-Off are used to support the club’s community grants and related projects.

Judges David Walsh and Patrick and Charlene Beattie crowned the Mathews Land Conservancy as repeat champs, winning the title of Best Chili and a $200 donation.

Everyone at the event got their own ballot sheets and the Mathews Museum won the People’s Choice award and $200, as well as the title of Best Decorated Booth and another $100.

The event got a financial boost as Linda Fleming, winner of the 50/50 raffle, won $625 and donated that back to the club.

Everyone with a ticket got the chance to enjoy bowls of chili, desserts and cornbread, as well as purchasing more chili to take home for their Super Bowl parties the following day.
