Heading into Spring Break, Mathews High School softball pitcher Hailey Love is on fire. The freshman phenom recorded 50 strikeouts in her first six games against some very tough competition. “I’m not sure Mathews ever had a freshman record that many Ks in only six games,” MHS varsity head coach J.J. Ashberry said. Recently, she had 14 strikeouts against 5A opponent Warwick, giving up only one earned run, and eight strikeouts against 4A Gloucester, also yielding only one earned run. After giving her arm a well-deserved break, Love is expected to be back on the pitcher’s mound on Monday as Mathews takes on visiting Nandua, starting at 4:30 p.m. Love is pictured here on March 26 against Northumberland with third baseman Marley Brock behind her....
