A major road project on Route 14 in Mathews, reconstruction of the North End Bridge, is nearing the halfway point. A release from Darragh Frye of the Virginia Department of Transportation said, “On Route 14 bridge over North End Branch in Mathews, construction is advancing and remains on schedule to be completed by late spring 2026.”Frye said crews are preparing to shift traffic onto the westbound newly-built side of the bridge deck by the end of this year after most recently pouring concrete. After the shift, the crews will reconstruct the eastbound side of the bridge. The traffic will remain reduced to one lane over North End Branch after the shift, and the traffic signal will continue to direct drivers through the work zone.
