One of Guinea’s friendliest gentlemen was chosen to be honored as grand marshal of this weekend’s 34th annual Guinea Jubilee.

Ellis West, who was born and who has spent most of his life living off Horse Point Road in Guinea, said he was thrilled to be picked for the recognition. "As many people as there are in Guinea, I’m honored they chose me," West said.

A waterman by trade, West said there is no better place to be than on the open water. He said the sunshine and fresh air is good for the soul and for good health.

His mother passed away when he was only 13 and with his father unable to work, West decided he would head out on the water with his brothers to help support the family. He later purchased a 40-foot Chesapeake Bay deadrise. That same workboat is still in the family today, being worked by his son, Joshua.

"I plan to go out and do some oystering with him next month," West said. "Just to get out in the sunshine."
