No news here: It’s been a swelteringly hot month

Gloucester and Mathews counties have sweltered in this summer’s heat for more than a month, and statistics recorded daily by Deb Buchanan prove it.

Buchanan, a Gwynn’s Island resident, is a volunteer observer for the National Weather Service. Each week she sends her figures of high and low temperatures, rainfall, snow accumulation (which she prefers), and wind speeds for the weather report that appears in the Gazette-Journal.

The past month, June 25 through July 25, has had the high temperature numbers to prove just how hot it has been.

Until the heat wave broke with Monday night’s storms, we have had in the past 30 days:

Eighteen days of temperatures that hit 90 or above;

Seven days that topped out at 95 or above;

Three stretches of 90 or above: June 27-29, July 2-6, and most recently, seven days between July 16 and 22.

In addition, the 30-day period brought 2.69 inches of rain to Buchanan’s home. Much of the rainfall in this period came in thunderstorms...
