Chris Newsome of Cobbs Creek, who serves as a fishing guide with his company Bay Fly Fishing LLC, has been appointed to a four-year term on the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, Gov. Ralph Northam announced Friday.
A lifelong resident of the Tidewater region, Newsome is a graduate of Mathews High School and Old Dominion University, where he earned a B.S. in biology with an emphasis in marine science.
Newsome said he has held numerous jobs that were reliant on healthy marine resources, and he has regulatory experience as a former environmental specialist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He has been a member of the Chesapeake Bay Stakeholder Advisory Group and serves on the board of directors for the American Saltwater Guides Association.
About his appointment, Newsome said, “I look forward to my service at VMRC to ensure marine habitats, fisheries, and coastal communities are provided the opportunity to thrive under responsible stewardship.”
