Glenn Sturm recently accepted the position of associate extension agent for the six counties on the Middle Peninsula.

Sturm, 23, began in his new job on March 12 and is based at the Gloucester Extension office on Carriage Court. He replaces Marilyn Morris as the Family and Consumer Sciences agent, who retired in June 2010 after many years of service with the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service.

Among areas Sturm is responsible for throughout the region are financial education and literacy, food nutrition and health, and family and human development.

Those broad areas include programs as diverse as a debt education course and child abuse awareness, he said.

Most recently, Sturm served in the AmeriCorps VISTA, a domestic version of the Peace Corps program, and was also part of the Extension’s Master Financial Education Volunteer program.

Earlier, he worked as a researcher and advisor for the African Aurora Business Network in Ghana, where he gained experience developing training seminars for entrepreneurs running small businesses like produce stands.

Sturm is a graduate of Virginia Tech, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business/finance from its Pamplin School of Business.

Originally from Long Island, N.Y., Sturm now resides in Gloucester.
