New course offerings approved for GHS students

The Gloucester School Board recently approved five new course offerings for Gloucester High School students at the request of GHS principal Tony Beverage.

The board gave its nod to English 11 Honors, Government Honors and U.S. History Honors classes. Beverage said the new honors courses will provide challenging alternatives for upperclassmen who do not want to pursue the Advanced Placement or dual enrollment offerings in these subject areas.

Also approved was a Concert Choir class for students who have had the beginning chorus classes but are not interested in auditioning for the select ensembles. The new choir will have after school rehearsals and participate in performances and competitions.

The board additionally approved a Capstone class for seniors who intend to pursue college studies but are not college-ready. It will target students who scored between 400 and 450 on their English SOL tests, and focus on critical reading, thinking and academic writing skills.
