Never forget

Today marks the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and as a reminder of this solemn occasion, one of the fire trucks that responded to the World Trade Center at Ground Zero came to town last week. Last Wednesday, FDNY Rescue 4 made a stop at Mathews High School, allowing local residents a rare opportunity to see a part of history. Newport News firefighter Stevie Ray of Gwynn brought the truck to the school as part of the Remembrance Rescue Project, with the Newport News firefighters’ union sponsoring the visit. The truck left the Hampton Roads area on Monday, headed for Raleigh, N.C. Rescue 4 is one of two FDNY trucks currently touring the country, with Rescue 5 on the West Coast. Eventually, both trucks will be placed on permanent display at the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City, Ray said. Photo by Charlie Koenig
