Narcotics sweep in Gloucester schools comes up empty

A search with dogs for narcotics in Gloucester public secondary schools came up empty on Monday, according to Sheriff Darrell Warren. Gloucester deputies, Virginia State Police canine units and members of the Tri-Rivers Narcotics Task Force conducted the sweep.

Warren said the sweeps began in Peasley and Page middle schools and concluded with a search at Gloucester High School. He said the schools went into extended lock-down sessions while the searches were conducted.

Classroom instruction was ongoing during the sweeps, Warren said, with only a few randomly chosen classrooms briefly evacuated so that narcotics detection dogs could enter. Otherwise, the sweep was primarily through secured hallways and locker areas. He said the dogs were also used for closer inspections of specific vehicles at GHS that were visually identified by officers as suspicious.
