MYRTLE CLEMENTS DAWSON

Myrtle Clements Dawson of Dare, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015, at the age of 92.

She was born on May 5, 1923, in Gloucester County, Va., to the late Winfield and Lavinia “Sissie” Hall Clements.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Dawson, and her siblings, James, Elizabeth “Bet,” John, Bertie, Minnie, Irvin, and Richard.

She is survived by her brother, Malcolm, and her daughters, Christine Latham and Patricia Duncan. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Walt Latham, Matthew Latham and his wife Jennifer, Jonathan Latham, Jack Duncan and his wife Ginny, and Katie Duncan. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Gavin Duncan, Eustace Duncan, and Mackenzie Latham. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy.

Myrtle loved her family and regarded them as more valuable than any riches one could possess. She cared for her community, volunteering many hours with her church, Providence United Methodist, and making her highly prized (and sugary) Apple Dapple cakes for the church bazaar. She worked at Seaford Elementary School for many years, where she was able to work with children. She loved working with children, and her eyes would light up when speaking with young people.

With her passing her family mourns the close of a love story that led to large family gatherings over the course of many holidays. We will miss her cards and birthday cakes and playing country music records after eating dinner. She and her husband left behind a legacy for their family to be proud of. We know that she is with her family once again, and we look forward to being reunited with them all one day.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015, at Providence United Methodist Church with the Rev. C. Douglas Akers and the Rev. Kay Barstow Gentry officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015, 6-7 p.m. at Amory Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to Providence United Methodist Church, 113 Old Dare Road, Yorktown, Va. 23692.
