MRA holds open house at Williams Wharf

Mobjack Rowing Association held an open house on Saturday morning at Williams Wharf. The purpose was to give all interested youth and their parents a picture of their spring rowing teams, how they train and how they handle the equipment used in the daily activities of competitive rowing.

Different members of the team took each visiting family through the different phases of rowing machine training, identifying types of boats and oars, how to handle and care for the equipment and then to demos on the water at the floating docks.

Visitors came from surrounding counties including a family from Irvington. The Mathews High School and Mobjack Rowing youth racing teams decided to miss a race at Occoquan due to time conflicts with the prom.

“I was impressed with our team’s knowledge and enthusiasm as they set up the displays and then guided visitors through all the phases of the rowing stations they had set up,” coach Tim Ulsaker said. “They gave clear explanations and answered questions. I was further pleased with the number of homeschool students that are looking for this kind of activity. Mobjack Rowing is happy to provide this for them as well as any public or private school students.”

The youth competitive teams will train this week in preparation for Saturday’s State Rowing Championships, being held at Sandy Run Regional Park in Occoquan.
