MPFAA program looks at Neoclassic, Romantic movements

The Middle Peninsula Fine Arts Association of Gloucester continues its lecture season on Thursday, March 19, with “The Bold and the Beautiful: A Survey of the Neoclassic and Romantic Movements” by art historian Elizabeth Cruickshanks. The free presentation begins at 7:15 p.m. at Arts on Main, 6580 Main Street, Gloucester. It is presented in partnership with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Europe was captivated by two competing artistic movements during the 18th and 19th centuries: Neoclassicism and Romanticism, said a press release. Neoclassic art, inspired by the ancient world, was the prevailing style for most of the 18th century, dominating every salon and private home throughout Europe. At the close of the century, Neoclassicism was met with a reactionary artistic movement: Romanticism.
