The Bay School Community Arts Center’s June Artist of the Month is Christy Dunkle of Clarke County, Virginia.
Dunkle began making mosaics in 2021, studying under Scottish mosaicist Rachel Davies and Seattle-based artist Kelley Knickerbocker. Dunkle uses a wide range of materials for her work, including Youghiogheny River shale that features a deep black color and contrasts well with the other materials, Marcellus shale needles, other slate and shale from the U.S. and Scotland, 24-karat gold leaf imbedded between pieces of glass, recycled roof tiles cut into rods and split, Mexican smalti, and more.
Her work can be found in venues and shows throughout the U.S. During June, it can be viewed online and shopped in the Art Speaks Gallery on Main Street in Mathews.
The Bay School is a nonprofit community art school and art gallery offering monthly shows, classes for all ages and skill levels, regional and local art, and community outreach programs.
