Monument parcel to be surveyed, not yet conveyed

A decision last month by the Mathews County Board of Supervisors to have the Court Green surveyed in preparation for the future transfer of parcels to private organizations caused confusion when the Gazette-Journal mistakenly reported that one of those transfers had already been approved.

Apprised of the mistake by several supervisors and other officials, an updated version of last week’s issue was printed and distributed in Mathews and the online article updated.

While the intent of the board is to transfer ownership of the parcel under the Confederate monument to local chapters of the Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and to transfer another parcel to an African American organization for an African American memorial for soldiers lost in all wars, neither of those transfers have yet taken place.
