The Mathews High School wrestling team secured the Super Region 1 A/B Championship title over the weekend, led by a strong performance that qualified nine individual wrestlers for the upcoming state tournament. The tournament was hosted by the Blue Devils on Saturday. The team’s success was highlighted by four regional champions—Eric Cardenas, Franklin Cardenas, Salvador Cardenas and Ivan Schaible—who each earned first-place finishes in their respective weight classes. Additionally, Carter Coles, Jayden Boyd and Jesse Monastyrly placed second, while Grayson Patterson and Roane Gray took third, rounding out the group of state qualifiers. Following the competition, the region’s coaches recognized the program’s leadership by naming Josh Schaible the Regional Coach of the Year. Ivan Schaible was voted alongside his dad with the “Outstanding Wrestler” award by the coaching staff.
