MHS wrestlers take 4th in state

The Mathews High School wrestling team finished its season in fourth place from out of 31 Class 1 schools in Virginia following the weekend’s VHSL State Championships at the Salem Civic Center.

The Blue Devil wrestlers, under the guidance of coach Josh Schaible, concluded the event with 108 team points. Rural Retreat won the title with 216 team points, followed by Grundy (192.5 points), Riverheads (128.5 points) and then Mathews.

Seven MHS wrestlers placed individually in order for the team to receive the team points, led by senior Ivan Schaible, who has committed to wrestle for Millersville University next year, who took second place at 157 lbs. Mathews also had two third-place finishers, two fifth-place finishers and two who took sixth place.

After getting a first-round bye, Ivan Schaible defeated Trenton Hall of George Wythe and scored a pin in 1:26 over Preston McCauley of Riverheads to advance to Saturday’s championship bout, where he fell to Chaz Penwright of Rural Retreat in a 4-1 decision.

Franklin (132 lbs.) and Sal (138 lbs.) Cardenas each placed third in their weight class, with Franklin posting his 100th career win on Friday at Salem. Carter Coles (120 lbs.) and Jesse Monastyrly (150 lbs.) both placed fifth, while Eric Cardenas (126 lbs.) and Jayden Boyd (144 lbs.) placed sixth.

Grayson Patterson (106 lbs.) and Roane Gray (165 lbs.) also competed for Mathews, but did not place.
