The Mathews High School wrestling team had a strong showing at Saturday’s annual Mathews Invitational, placing seventh overall out of 17 teams competing.
The team had four wrestlers who placed in the top four of their respective weight class. Richard Hahn (175 lbs.) and Franklin Cardenas (126 lbs.) both placed second, Zac Salvadori (120 lbs.) came in third overall in his weight class, and Salvador Cardenas placed fourth in the 132 lbs. weight class.
Hahn, a junior, was a great representative of the wrestling team, having a strong showing at this tournament. In his freshman year, he placed first in his weight class. In Saturday’s finals match, he fell by a pin to Kenneth Hamilton of Gloucester, earning his second-place title. His record is now 12-7 for the season hoping to continue his positive record.
Community support of the MHS wrestling team is strong. Head coach Josh Schaible thanked M&M Building Supply and All American Handyman and Construction for their sponsorship in the 2025 Virginia Duals which they will compete in this weekend. The team was scheduled to travel to Gloucester High for a quad match yesterday, but that meet has been postponed until next Wednesday, Jan. 15.
