MHS wrestlers go 15-9 in first meet

The Mathews High School wrestling team began its 2017-2018 season on Nov. 29 in a meet at Peninsula Catholic. Although Mathews went 0-3 as a team against Ocean Lakes, Nandua and the host Knights, MHS wrestlers won most of the matches in which they competed.

Only eight wrestlers were on the team’s roster for its first event; team members went 15-9 individually (winning six of eight matches against Ocean Lakes, going 4-4 against Peninsula Catholic, and 5-3 versus Nandua).

Aaron Miles (113 lbs.), Caleb Sadler (126 lbs.) and Carlos Vincent (182 lbs.) all went 3-0, Isaiah Bivens and Haden Higginbotham went 2-1 and Jacob Dalton and Fred West went 1-2.

On Tuesday, the team traveled to Essex to face North-

umberland and the host Trojans. Mathews went 2-0 on the night, beating Northumberland 48-24 and Essex 46-18. Joshua Rosadino (106 lbs.), Miles, Higginbotham (120 lbs.), Bivens (132 lbs.), Dayvon Whiting (138 lbs.), O’Hygie Johnson (145 lbs.) and Dalton (170 lbs.) all went 2-0 individually on the night.

The Blue Devil wrestlers, coached by Josh Schaible, are scheduled to travel to Northampton on Monday. Following the Christmas break, they return to action on Jan. 6 as they host an invitational.
