History was made on the mats on Saturday as the Mathews High School wrestling team captured the team title at the annual Mathews Invitational. In a dominant performance, the Blue Devils secured their first tournament championship in over 20 years. The Blue Devils fended off stiff competition to claim the top spot, with Colonial Heights and Warwick finishing second and third, respectively. The championship run was fueled by a string of individual titles. Four Mathews wrestlers stood atop the podium in their respective weight classes: Ivan Schaible (157 lbs.), Sal Cardenas (138 lbs.), Frank Cardenas (132 lbs.) and Eric Cardenas (126 lbs.). The Mathews roster was on full display as several other Blue Devils fought their way into the finals. Jesse Monastyrly (150 lbs.), Jayden Boyd (144 lbs.), and Carter Coles (120 lbs.) all earned runner-up honors.
