MHS volleyball posts wins over Carver, Tabb

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team picked up a pair of straight-set victories during the past week over Carver Academy and Tabb High School, while the junior varsity girls beat the Tabb Tigers, 2-0.

The Lady Devils hosted Carver Academy in a varsity-only contest last Thursday that began with the celebration of Senior Night. Seniors Belle Massimino, Lauren Mitchem, Anne Stewart, Tori Hicks and Ashley Shackleford were recognized, along with their parents.

Mathews had little trouble defeating the Lady Wolverines, taking the game, 25-12, 25-14 and 25-7. Mitchem led the team in aces with nine, followed by Hannah Robins (eight), Stewart (seven) and Maddie Maggioncalda (five). Robins had a team-leading 14 assists. Stewart and Shayla Wheeler each contributed three kills, with Hicks, Mitchem and Shackelford adding two apiece.
