MHS varsity loses two; jayvees nab a win

Mathews High School’s boys’ basketball team hit a rough spot in the past week, losing matchups at Lancaster High School and at home against King and Queen Central.

Meeting last Thursday at Lancaster, the Blue Devils fell to the Red Devils, 54-43.

Trailing by two at start of the second quarter, MHS lost stride with many turnovers forced by the tough Lancaster defense. The Red Devils led, 29-17, at the half. Mathews could not make up any ground in the second half and took the loss.

The team’s leading scorer was Jalen Matthews, who finished the game with 12 points. Also contributing to the scoring column were Elijah Willis and Christian Williams, who both had 11, Jarius Monroe with 6, and Caleb Thomas with 2 points.

Jalen Matthews also led the team in rebounds, with a total of 8. He was closely followed by Caleb Thomas with 7, and Elijah Willis with 6. Jarius Monroe and Matthews led the team in assists, both ending the game with 3.
