Following wins over West Point and Middlesex, the Mathews High School varsity soccer team earned the Tidewater District championship. The Blue Devils opened regional play yesterday with hopes of a trip to the state championship in Radford.
Mathews defeated West Point by a 7-1 margin Friday and shut out the visiting Chargers on Monday, 5-0 to claim the district trophy. The Blue Devils hosted the Lancaster Red Devils on Wednesday. The winner faces Rappahannock on Friday, with the Group 1 Region A tournament continuing on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
Mathews drew the Pointers in Friday’s district opener. The two regular season matchups between these two teams ended in a tie and a 1-0 victory for Mathews, so the game was expected to be competitive. Mathews started aggressively, and the tight pressure paid off. The Blue Devils broke the ice only five minutes into the match, as Jonny McCann crossed the ball to Miles Maggioncalda for the goal.
